When it comes to air freight shipping, carriers will charge by either volumetric weight (dimensional weight) or actual weight. If the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight of the product, the volumetric weight becomes the chargeable weight. The cost of air freight is also determined by the shipment's origin, destination, and cargo density. Other fees include airline terminal handling fees, customs clearance fees, and delivery charges to the customer’s warehouse.

The transit time of a shipment greatly depends on the cargo specifications and the frequency of flights on the requested shipment route. For international shipments from, say, Shanghai to Los Angeles, air shipments can take as little as 1 day. That’s in contrast with an FCL shipment that might take >30 days for the same journey.
